Selling the Drama

I didn’t think Theo Epstein had it in him. I was confident that the Boston Red Sox were just going through the motions of trying to trade Manny Ramirez. I thought that all of the trade talk this past week was designed to show Manny that the Sox tried to grant his wish for a trade, but due to Manny’s bad attitude no one wanted him. I thought that this would be the motivation that Manny needed to put up monster numbers the next two months of the season and ensure the giant free agent contract that he so desired.

I guess I was wrong.

Goodbye, Manny. Hello, Jason Bay!

Why trade arguably the greatest right handed hitter in Major League history? For starters, Manny has always been about Manny. He doesn’t care about the game of baseball. He doesn’t care about the fans, and he sure as hell doesn’t give a crap about his teammates. If he did he wouldn’t have put himself in this situation.

Boston has always been a blue-collar, hard working city that prides itself on supporting a baseball team that always plays hard and gives 100%. That’s why guys like Trot Nixon, Gabe Kapler and Dustin Pedroia are fan favorites. The fans put up with Manny’s laissez-faire attitude as long as we could, but eventually his act grew tired.

Manny was set up to be the sixth Red Sox player to have his number retired at Fenway Park. He was going to be the guy would tell our grandchildren about, the same way we heard stories about Ted Williams. Manny was that good.

But that wasn’t enough for Manny.

Manny thrived in the spotlight, and if it wasn’t shining on him, another version of Manny would appear. The Manny that pouted and pulled himself from the lineup. The Manny that would never play through the same pain that each and every one of his teammates were playing through during the course of a long season.
The Manny that called out management and quit on teammates.

Don’t think for a second that dealing Manny across the country is going to change anything. He’s still going to be the guy that doesn’t run out ground balls and flops around the outfield. How will Manny’s defense be now that he’s actually going to have to cover some ground, without a 37-foot-tall security blanket right behind him? How will Manny’s numbers be affected going from an offensive paradise at Fenway to the land of the long fly-ball out?

These questions are going to be answered sooner rather than later. Manny can now be Manny, for as long as he wants to.

I’m just glad I don’t have to watch it anymore.

Ya but it sucks that they had to give up Hansen and Moss as well though. I could see giving up all that talent for a Matt Holiday, but Bay doesnt seem worth it to me at all. However, he is a righty, and a Canadian to boot!

    LTZ,
I agree that Boston gave up a lot to rid themselves of Manny. It must have worse behind the scenes than the Sox were letting on. I am going to miss Brandon Moss, he is a solid player. Unfortunately, the Boston outfield is too overcrowded for him. He’ll do well in Pittsburgh. As for Hansen, I really don’t think he’s ever going to the pitcher Boston was hoping for when they drafted him. I don’t think Boston is better without Manny, but I do think that there is something to be said for having all the players on the same page and working hard towards a common goal.

  3. BOSTON BADBOYS Says:

GOOD BYE MANNY.. He did bring two rings to Boston And at times we loved him,.But we have no idea what a pain in the ASS he was in the club house or with the management. Manny had a good deal playing in the band box called FENWAY PARK..But he had to be stupid to ask for a trade. Now he is in lalala Land and I don t think JOE is going to take Mannys BULLSHIT. We did lose a little getting rid of him..But this kid BAY IS GOING TO BE BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR BOSTON FANS ,LETS GIVE HIM A CHANCE .WE let Nomar go an got better .. HOLLYWOOD can have Manny. Now we have some one who wants to be in BOSTON ..I SEE GOOD THINGS FOR BOSTON . ps i still hate bill buckner !!

  4. MARLIN MIKE Says:

Manny will be a bust in L.A. Just like Andrew Jones and Nomar. the Yankees will sign him in November to be the D.H… Gambi will be traded to the White Sox. M anny will pull his I am hurt crap in New York . the Yankees will then get piss off, eat his contract and trade him to the Marlins . M anny has property in Miami , he will become a part time player and a beach bum . get in trouble and never make the hall of fame ..word to Boston you dumped him at the right . REMMBER you saw it here first from Marlin Mike and THE FOUL LINE .

Marlin Mike, I couldn’t agree with you more……I hope…………..I will miss Manny’s bat, Manny’s intimidating numbers allowing Ortiz to be pitched to, and odd as this may sound, he did know how to play the wall in Fenway. That said, I feel that a team will be better when everyone is on the same page, and working towards the same goal. This will be good for the Sox, maybe not this year, but another World Series ring is our’s in 3 years tops.

ps. I’m offering a free round of golf at the prestigious Port Charlotte Country Club to anyone who tackles Farve hard enough to take him out of football for good, attention whore.

  6. Dave Says:

    Dylan,
I will never stand up and cheer for quitter, and team cancer Manny Ramirez. Man-Ram has now joined the ranks of the Johnny Damon, Joe Maddon and Peyton Manning in my eyes. The less I see of these guys..the better.

LEE

  9. Matt McLaughlin Says:

Farve to New York. Im calling it. He will be the #1 starter for the … the… Yankees in a weeks time.

Joba went down, George-Lite has papa’s money and the transition to pitching cant be too hard. Hes willing to learn a new offence, how about playing defence. Samarjia can do it why cant Brett?

He can throw a football at 72, I think that equates to somewhere around 98-101 in MLB. (They did some sort of conversion before, dont remember)
