An Honest Mistake

On March 14, 2008, I may have made the worst mistake of my life. I went to a spring training game in St. Pete featuring the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays. Now, this was obviously a mistake, but it was not the grave mistake that I made that may have changed the baseball world forever. Let me explain.

Three friends and I went to the above mentioned game. When we arrived at the field, it quickly turned overcast and the temperature dropped. Soon after, the rain started. Dressed in only a t-shirt and shorts, I quickly ran to the nearest souvenir stand to find something of the sweatshirt variety. Unfortunately for me and, as it turned out, all of Red Sox Nation, all that was available was Rays gear. Opting to prevent possible hypothermia, I plunked down thirty bucks for a Rays long-sleeve shirt.

What has happened since has been a whirlwind. First, Evan Longoria hit a homerun to win the game for Tampa. Since then, the Rays have done their best 1927 Yankees impersonation and steamrolled the league.

After that fateful day, I put the shirt in my dresser and forgot all about it. Today I came across it again, and I made the decision to change history. Today I exorcised the Devil.

I burned my Tampa Bay Rays shirt because I hate the Rays

I apologize to all Red Sox fans for this unfortunate event and for all the trouble I’ve caused.

LOL, not bad. Im sure its all your fault, it has nothing to do with the rays young talent or anything

red sox nation hates you lol

  2. Dave Says:

Who would have ever thought 30 bucks would have had so much influence on history. Boy am I glad that I found that shirt today and could rectify the situation.

  3. Dan Says:

So the rays are back to last place finishes again right?

  4. Dave Says:

God I hope so….but I’ve been wrong before.

  5. Dan Says:

Are you a Red sox/rays fan, or a red sox/yankees fan? which do u prefer?

  6. Dave Says:

I prefer neither. If Rays fans had been supporting the rays since their inception I would be more inclined to not hate them, but I honestly am starting to hate the Rays more than the Yankees. But I hate both teams a whole lot. At this rate, I am a Red Sox/ Phillies fan. lol

  7. Dan Says:

Its impossible to support a team when they have given nothing back to you, i mean think about it, it wasnt just the losing, vince namoli showed no effort to improve the club at all, there were no signs of the club even trying to improve, it was very disheartning for the fans of the team. No end to the losing even appeared to be on the way. Now the team is winning, and the fans have a reason to get involved, and season ticket deposits for next year have already tripled and this season isnt even over yet. If the rays go back to losing, and the fans leave again, then u can call us fairweather, but dont judge us to harshly just yet. You cant love something that has never loved you back

  8. Dave Says:

I had to wait 30 years of my life for the Red Sox to win a World Series. Even when they stunk, I supported them. I don;t think you’re going to have to wait that long, but when it does happen and you were along for the ride the whole time it’s pretty sweet.

  9. Dan Says:

Of course, I went through this when my bucs won the super bowl, and when my lightning won the stanley cup. Im just sayin this isnt a fairweather town, on saturday the lightning, despite finishing last last year, and the rays and gators playing at the same time, drew 18000 out of 21000 capacity. the bucs sold out every game of the 06 season despite finishing 4-12. The rays will be no differnt, there here to stay. and by the way, are you a patriots fan?

  10. Dave Says:

I hope that you are right about the Rays fans sticking around. I am in fact a Patriots fan. You’ll probably be surprised to hear that I am a big Tampa Bay Lightning fan also. We’ll save that conversation for another day though.

Dylan and I tag teamed a Rays fan on facebook. His son plays with my brother at Harold Ave, and Doug flew up to Boston to root for the Rays. His status earlier, was that he was surrounded by idiots wearing red. My response was “when the sox win, and dirty water is playing, you will be surrounded by a bunch of SINGING idiots wearing red.”

Dave. I think all of your Red Sox shirts were rubbing off on the Rays shirt. If by you buying a 30 dollar shirt in spring training leads a team to not only win the East, but trash teams in the playoffs, I think we can start a foulline collection for 30 dollars and get you the nicest Red Sox shirt to place in that EXACT same position on your dresser.

btw, Saturday Night I am calling/broadcasting the FGCU Hockey Game AND watching the Sox. This hockey game is going to be so ONE sided, that there will officially be MORE Baseball being talked about and less hockey seeing as how we are going to beat DUKE 9-0, just my prediction.

I hate fairweather Sox fans who turned off before the 7th. They deserve NOT to see true redsox baseball. I bet those people who left in the 7th were shitting them selves listening to WEEI on the drive home. But then again, those jerkoffs dont know what channel WEEI is by heart and probably were not listening to the game.

St Petersburg, Fl– Presidential Candidate Barack Obama praised the Tampa Bay Rays today, and is stated as putting them at the head of his new energy plan “With all the fans hoping on the Bandwagon at once, the use of personal automobiles has dropped significantly in the Tampa Area” Obama stated “At this rate, the entire Pinellas and Hillsborough county populations will be on board, cutting energy use down in a city in which people don’t have that much energy to begin with”.

While he can’t aruge the bandwagon hoping is good for the economy and for energy comsumption, Rival John McCain warned voters of Obama’s ideals for the Rays. “Sure, they are all on board now, and riding that wagon strong, but this is Tampa” McCain stated ” How many Lightning fans from a year ago can list off this years roster?”. The American population will have to wait until November 4th to find out. One Voter who has made up his mind though is David Ortiz. ” I don’t wish anything wrong or bad upon anyone” said the sox slugger ” and that’s why I’m voting Obama, he has a better health care plan, and those fans are going to get hurt falling off that bandwagon”.

  24. Dan Says:

Hey Red Sox nation, is it ok for rays fans to be scared out there fucking minds?! just wondering

  25. Dave Says:

last I checked, the Rays were still winning the series. In the immortal words of Winston Wolf, “let’s not start sucking each others d&@*’s quite yet. There is a lot of baseball left.
Dan, thanks as always for commenting. You are a loyal and knowledgable baseball fan, we appreciate your insight.

  26. Dan Says:

Yes the rays are still winning this series, and we have big game james on the mound, so why cant i shake this nagging impeding sense of doom?

  27. Dave Says:

The Red Sox are like Satan, you never invite them into your house.Once these guys get some confidence… Look out. Don’t let this shake your enthusiasm for the Rays. I’ve been going to several Rays fan sites lately, and I’m convinced your the only real Tampa fan out there. Please tell me I’m wrong, and that you know some more…who would have thought burning that Rays shirt would have had such an impact???

  28. Dan Says:

I have all kinds of friends who love the rays just as much as me, i go to games with them, please dont judge the fan base by the dumbasses that have come out of the woodwork the last two months, i have found out that bandwagon fans are the loudest, most obnoxouis fans out there, thats why i hated red sox fans so much, because i only knew the loud bandwagoners, i had never met real, sensible sox fans until i came on this site. There are real fans out there, u just have to find them. I havnt lost hope, its just Iv seen this movie before, and i didnt like the first two screenings. Its our time now, u guys had your time. we deserve this

  29. LTZ Says:

Can someone please fill me in on how “big game James” got his credentials?

  30. Dan Says:

Well two dominating postseason starts always helps, everytime the rays needed a big start hes come through

Dan, this is some great baseball my man, I’m glad theres a sensible Rays fan out there that appreciates that. Hold on for the weekend, this could be a wild ride.

  33. Dan Says:

Oh its gonna be fun, and matt, lets see how much of a softball pitcher he is 2morow when he sends the rays to the world series.

  34. Matt McLaughlin Says:

T-Minus 12 hours and 30 minutes until the Sox push game 7.

I hate always being right about these guys.

I just wish I wasnt right about CALLING 82-80 (winning record) for the Rays at the begining of the season. I hate to end these kids streak and all but George Mason lost, the Cowboys still will not make it to the Super Bowl this year, and the Rays will still NOT be the class of the AL East yet again. They won the battle with the Division. Thats nice. But when it counts? Come on.

Now Welcome to Charlotte County, the AL Runner Up Rays. They almost had it, but blew it, Rays.

  35. Dave Says:

let’s not get too cocky. If Tampa has proved anything this season, it’s their uncanny ability to put these bad games of their minds. Let’s also remember, Beckett has an 11+ ERA this post season, and hasn’t hit 95 MPH on the radar in quite some time. There is a ton of ball left to be played. I’m just happy to see the Sox play at least one more.

    I believe in Guiness……….

So, in a Golf Scramble today, I had on a Titleist/Red Sox cap. I was minding my own business on the practice tee hitting a few balls, listenting to my ipod, and drinking coffee…a nice morning I think. When out of nowhere, the fattest, most obnoxious foursome of mid 20 year olds shows up on the range. These were the type you could tell were too out of shape and goofy all their lives to play real sports, and never really spoke to a real girl. After high school I’m sure they rushed some d-bag frat in college, did okay in school, and got some boring insurance sale’s man job. Now, they fill their weekends with really pathetic golf, and a hope that buy following sports “closely” they will fill the void of never being athletic……….So, after seeing my hat, they chime in with the entire, “Rays are gonna kick your asses tonight” and “if you like Boston so much move back”. Which to date are the best conversation pieces the Bay area has come up with since, “man, we have one big ol’ bridge huh?”. I didn’t even respond at first. Then, to my joy, a fellow sox fan showed, and we had a educated conversation on baseball, the sox chances, and the speed of the greens. All the while the decons of divots behind me kept yelling insults my way………Finally, I told them nice shot after one of them hit a fat 7 iron went 10 yards and covered himself in dirt, then proceeded to ask them if they knew the Rays existed before 2008. For the rest of the day, these guys taunted me and wouldn’t lay off. Normally, I go off on people like this. But, I’m over it. It’s like screaming at a wall with these fans…….My final word on Tampa Bay……..You’ve been in the baseball spotlight for a little over 15min. Be proud of your team, cheer loud, try and fill a stadium. But don’t stick you’re chest out like you’ve been here for 30 years. You’re riding the glory of a team that fought hard all year long, with no fans, only to now have bleached blonde wanna be milfs show up in the stands. The Red Sox had a nation, a family if you will, before and after the 2004 series. Please Respect that. Sorry if this was rambling on. I’m not proofreading this either, so if it’s one big ru on stream of conscious sentence, sorry…….
