Dethroning Allan, Week Sixteen

We’re now officially 2/3 of the way through the regular season, and things are becoming quite clear. Rays Those Cowbells and Believe The Hype are done. The October Boys are on life support, and team Stogies and Panda the Hammer are on the outside looking in and will need help to get in the final four.

If you weren’t named in that paragraph, congratulations! You’re officially a contender and are in great shape heading into the stretch drive. Must be a nice feeling, I wouldn’t know.

Let’s get to some rankings.

Week Sixteen Power Rankings

1) WillisBeTheYear- What do you know, a loss. I guess he is human after all. Dealt from his absurdly good pitching staff and brought in Todd Frazier to boost his lineup. The rich get richer.

2) Yankeehaters- A four game winning streak is always nice. Dave will mostly just be doing some fine tuning from here out. He’ll be in the final four.

3) sportsmanMike- Had a strong week and took a tough loss. Has a two game lead on a playoff spot with eight games remaining. Barring a total collapse, this team is good enough to get in and be a factor when he does.

4) Love Boat Captains- Had an amazing week and dispatched a really strong sportsmanMike team. As predicted, the Fried Chicken division will soon be in her grasp.

5) Stogies- Had a great week and took down the #1 team in the power rankings. Does this team have enough to steal the Fried Chicken division?

6) Panda the Hammer- A three game win streak has vaulted this team back into the race. Made a really nice trade today and brought in Carlos Gomez to strengthen the offense. Still needs alot of help to get past the teams in front of him.

7) RedRays- Taking on water faster than the Titanic. A four game skid is coming at the worst possible time, and if he doesn’t turn things around in a hurry, there won’t be meaningful September games for team RedRays.

8) The October Boys- Scored only 234 points in a victory this week. This years version of the October Boys just doesn’t seem to have what it takes.

9) Rays Those Cowbells- Fantasy Football draft is Sunday, September 6th.

10) Believe The Hype- Is Adrian Peterson worth the #1 overall pick coming off an entire year off? That’s the question facing Allan as he preps for Fantasy Football.

Game of the Week

Stogies vs Yankeehaters

The Dave’s square off. A game team Stogies really can’t afford to lose.

Game of the Weak

Rays Those Cowbells vs Believe The Hype

Could it possibly get any more mediocre than this? It’s the battle for who sucks a little bit less! Yay?

Good luck to everyone in Week 17.

Dethroning Allan, Week Fifteen

The short week in fantasy is always a huge wild card. Anything can happen in a three day week, as hitters can be cold from days off and PSR’s get all jacked up. It’s the worst week of the season.

Fortunately for most of our contenders, they were able to grind through and pull out big wins. When you can grab a victory in the short week, it almost feels like a “cheap win” because you didn’t have to go through the long seven day grind to earn it. It can be a real boost to your playoff chances.

Let’s get to some rankings

Week Fifteen Power Rankings

1) WillisBeTheYear- Scored 232 points in a three day week. Are you serious? Willis is now my arch-enemy.

2) sportsmanMike- Didn’t set his lineup and still somehow won. It really just might be his year.

3) Yankeehaters- Had four players score 0 points and still managed to scrape a five point win. I still think Dave needs another pitcher.

4) Love Boat Captains- Is Zack Grienke and Jake Arrieta the best dynamic duo in the league? These guys are lights out every single time they take they mound. Grienke has to be the front-runner for the CY Young right now.

5) RedRays- Another team that fell victim to not setting a lineup. Can we just petition to have the short week eliminated and call it a bye week?

6) Panda the Hammer- A two-game winning streak is threatening to get him back in it. Does Sam have a great run in him in the 2nd half? Cueto being traded to a contender could boost his value and get him more victories in the 2nd half.

7) Stogies- Terrible week for team Stogies. Faced a team that basically punted and gave up on the week, starting only 2 PSRs, and yet still couldn’t find a way to get a win. Please cut Justin Verlander. He’s utterly useless.

8) Rays Those Cowbells- Scored the 2nd-highest points in the league and lost, again. Whatever

9) The October Boys- Can trading for Bryce Harper boost this team? Even at 5-10, the mediocre Beer division isn’t out of reach. This team needs a real first baseman.

10) Believe The Hype- True to form, Allan is still fighting hard. Could’ve won this week, just ran into Zack Grienke.

Game of the Week

sportsmanMike vs Love Boat Captains

Two strong contenders face off. Mike needs to keep pace in the Fried Chicken division and Ginger needs to maintain her lead in the Beer division. An intriguing match-up.

Good luck to everyone in Week 16.

Dethroning Allan, All Star Break

We’ve reached the unofficial “half-way point” of the fantasy season, and to me, it’s getting pretty clear who’s a contender and who’s a pretender. So I figured in honor of the All Star break shortened week that we all love so much, I’d change up the fantasy review this week and take a page from thefoulline.com fantasy reviews past and write a contenders and pretenders list.  So let’s get to it!

Contenders

WillisBeTheYear

The easy favorite for the league title. Think about this, Willis has Clayton Kershaw, Corey Kluber, and Jose Fernandez on his team. And it’s Dallas Keuchel who is starting the All Star game for the AL, who by the way, is also on this team as well. Add in an offense led by Jose Bautista, Jose Reyes, Adrian Gonzalez and the suddenly unstoppable Brett Gardner, and you have a team that is hard to beat. After years of almost and not quite, Willis has untapped his full potential as a GM this year and is coming hard for that elusive championship. Great job this year.

Yankeehaters

Another year, another Yankeehaters team in contention. This season has been no different than any other for Dave, lots of wins and lots of trades. The injury bug has begun to hit this team, as Scott Kazmir, Stephen Strasburg and Dee Gordon have all gone down recently. I’m sure this just means that more trades are on the way, right? There’s really not much to say about this team. Dave will find his way into the playoffs as usual and be a threat when he gets there.

sportsmanMike

Has anyone taken a minute to actually look at this team? He’s won 8 of 9 games, and is scoring 315+ nearly every week. The dynamic duo of Chris Sale and Jacob deGrom put up monster points every week, and this offense might be the most consistent in the league. Paul Goldschmidt, Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana, Mookie Betts, AJ Pollock, the returning Jacoby Ellsbury, the resurgent Alex Rodriguez (vomit). Mike has put it all together this year and with a three game lead on a playoff spot, it looks like the playoff drought finally ends. Good for you Mike.

Love Boat Captains

This team still can’t quite get over the skids. Ginger soared out of the gate to a 5-0 start, but is just 2-5 since. I still say health is a big factor for this team. Show me the team that can win consistently when Anthony Rendon, Giancarlo Stanton, Matt Holliday and Jake Odorizzi are out of your lineup. Things haven’t been pretty over the last two months, but you just get the feeling that’s it will only be a matter of time before the LBC’s put the strangle hold on the weaker Beer division.

RedRays

Even with a two-game losing streak, this team is managing to hold on to contention. Losing Miguel Cabrera really hurts, and any team starting Kelly Johnson in their OF is really hurting right now. This team has put up some good point totals this season, but you get the feeling that this is the dreaded “tweener” team. Good enough to hang around until the final weeks, but will ultimately just fall short.

Pretenders

Stogies

I know I know… This team is tied for it’s division lead. Why on the pretenders list? With probably the best collection of offensive talent in the league, this team should be a threat to win it all right? Eh… This team’s awful pitching staff is going to do him in. A trade of one of your many offensive studs for a dominant ace might be the best course of action from here.

Rays Those Cowbells

Not to sound like a broken record, but I really feel like I should be on the other list. I won’t go too much into it, I know people must be weary of my complaining, but I feel I have a much better team than my record. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Panda the Hammer

Had a great week and led the league in scoring, but unfortunately plays in the Fried Chicken division and is behind three teams with at least 9-5 records. Even if this team went on a huge run, he’s not going to catch the teams in front of him.

The October Boys

Much like Rays Those Cowbells, this team is still in it because the teams leading his division are only at 7-7. If any team could go on a surprise run and get themselves back in it, it could be this team. I still like this roster and again, much like the RTC’s, it’s very surprising to see him at 5-9. I mean he’s got Felix and MadBum leading his rotation. Why does he keep losing?

Believe The Hype

Playing much better lately, but is in the same situation as Sam. Playing in the stronger division is going to be the death of this team. It may be a tough break, but I like to think it’s karma for sneaking into the playoffs in the awful division last year and running away with the league championship. Still, Allan will NEVER quit. Don’t count this is as an easy win if you see him coming up on your schedule.

Good luck to everyone in the short week. Enjoy the All Star break!

Dethroning Allan, Week Thirteen

Points!

You know I think with baseball being on the verge of naming the 2015 All-Star teams, it seems only fitting to me that every game around the league was decided by All-Star playes putting up big point totals. Whether it was Gerrit Cole, Jose Bautista, Paul Goldschmidt, Jason Kipnis or Bryce Harper, every team that won this week was carried by great players seemingly putting up 25+ points. It seems we’ve reached that point in the season where everyone is settled in, the weather has heated up, and hitters can go on long hot streaks and pitchers can carve through mediocre lineups using their best stuff.

Hopefully this means my writing has settled in and can now perform to the best of it’s abilities. Let’s get to some rankings.

Week Thirteen Power Rankings

1) WillisBeTheYear- Faced the second highest scoring team of the week and still won. Pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this team. The clear favorite for the championship at this point.

2) sportsmanMike- Gutted out a tough win when the PSR’s weren’t in his favor. This isn’t like the teams Mike has built in the past. This years version has the talent, toughness and the staying power to compete for a championship. Has won six out seven games and continues to get stronger.

3) Yankeehaters- Completely blew out a good team in the RedRays. Dave gets the clear “manager of the week” award this week, as three guys he picked up off the waiver wire, JD Martinez, Eduardo Rodriguez and CJ Wilson, combined for over 115 points. This team appears to be finding it’s legs for a championship drive, but if I can be honest for a moment, I wasn’t that sad to see Stephen Strasburg go on the DL. Maybe that makes me a bad person, but it’s comforting to me to know that he doesn’t just hate me, but will screw over anyone. Is there any bigger talent tease in baseball? I’ll never roster that guy again.

4) RedRays- It wasn’t a great week for the RedRays. Got blown out in a big game against the Yankeehaters, and lost superstar Miguel Cabrera for six weeks. But he was really aggressive on the trade market, bringing in Prince Fielder immediately after to fill the void in a trade with Rays Those Cowbells. The next month is going to be crucial for this team. The schedule gets really tough and he’ll be without his best hitter. We’ll see what this team is made of this week.

5) Love Boat Captains- What on earth happened to Ian Desmond? It’s like he literally forgot how to play baseball. Ginger finally got fed up today, sending him off the waiver wire, and I don’t blame her one bit. It could be a rough stretch for the three-time champion, injuries are piling up and the schedule is getting tougher. But we’ve seen this movie before. She’ll come through it strong.

6) Stogies- Another week, another win. Team Stogies sends the beer division to a three-way tie at the top. The big guns in his offense led the way this week, with Andrew McCutchen, Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant all posting 25+ point totals. I still like this roster,  but I think it’s pretty clear who has the golden horseshoe this year. This team just won it’s 6th game of the season scoring under 300 points. That can work for a little while, but this team will really need to improve it’s performance if it wants to hang with the standouts of the league.

7) Rays Those Cowbells- Scored 336 points, second highest total of the week, lost. Sitting at 5-8 leading my division in points scored by nearly 200 points over every other team and is currently the second highest scoring team in the league, sitting in 7th place. If this sounds like sour grapes, that’s because it is. I’m upset and I’m complaining. I figure it’s the only thing I haven’t tried yet. At some point, my good performances and high point totals HAVE to get rewarded right?

8) The October Boys- Had a really good shot to win, wasn’t down by that much and had Madison Bumgarner and Felix Hernandez both pitching over the weekend. Sadly they both let him down and led to another tough loss. It just seems like this is one of the more talented rosters in the league but they never all just click together at the same time. It can be a deadly combo. Your roster is talented, so you don’t make changes, but you keep losing and fall further and further back. Then you look up and it’s too late.

9) Panda the Hammer- Why is this team still rostering Aaron Harang? Why is Aroldis Chapman on his bench for another closer when the Reds play a full seven game slate this week? I don’t know what’s going on with this team this year.

10) Believe The Hype- Tell me the secret Allan. I tried to use Kendall Graveman against the Love Boat Captains in week three and got -5 points. You did the exact same thing and got 50 points. This was a really great week for Allan. He lost TWO Sonny Gray starts, and still managed to pull out a win against a really good team. Is that Allan run back to contention finally starting?

Game of the Week

WillisBeTheYear vs RedRays

The two division leaders square off. Can team RedRays rebound from scoring under 200 points and knock off the league #1? I’m interested to find out.

Good luck to everyone in Week 14!
