I’ll Take Seconds Please

Second choice isn’t so bad, is it?

Lawrence Taylor was taken second overall. So was Kevin Durant. Ditto for Calvin Johnson. Baseball has had it’s share of dominant second overall studs as well, such as Josh Beckett, Justin Verlander, and thefoulline.com’s favorite son, JD Drew. So it’s no wonder I’m feeling downright giddy about my draft position this year.

In recent years, three in a row to be exact, I’ve been stuck with the dreaded ninth overall pick. It’s been a real pain to watch great players fly off the board and having to scramble for flawed first rounders like an old Miggy Cabrera, or the god-awful Giancarlo Stanton (barf). But this year will be different! I get my elite player! But who will it be? I’ve been running over my choices in my mind, and I’ve narrowed it down to these four super studs.

The Favorite

Mike Trout

Pretty much goes without saying. If the rumors are true and Allan selects another player with the first pick, it will only take me a few seconds to make this selection. Just to make sure I’ve clicked on the right player.

The Fallback

Kris Bryant

This league sure seems to love it some Bryant. His Average Draft Position in CBS sports leagues is around 8th or so, but he’s a strong contender to go first overall this Sunday. I think we’re the ones that have it right. Bryant is a super stud entering his prime, and could even have a higher ceiling than his MVP campaign of last year. Allan sure seems sold, telling anyone who will listen that Bryant is the pick. If he’s not, he won’t be on the clock much longer.

The Dark Horse

Manny Machado

Forty homer power in a great division for hitting dingers, and Shortstop eligibility. It just goes to show the strength of this generation of young studs that he isn’t a lock for the #1 overall pick. Ten years ago lesser talent and stats got Hanley Ramirez taken first in every single draft. I’m still considering Machado for my selection. He’s one of my favorite players in MLB. If he had managed to even keep some of the 20 steals from 2015, he would be playing for Rays Those Cowbells this year.

Mr Safe

Paul Goldschmidt

This guy doesn’t get enough respect. All he does is rake every year, help out in all five categories, and yet every year he slips to the middle of the first round. It mystifies me. It’s almost become boring and less fun to select Goldy to anchor your team. He reminds me of late 2000s Chase Utley, who was money in the bank every year but never got the proper recognition that he deserved. I’m not going to pick Goldy, but he’ll go soon after, and finish in the top five for hitters, again. This pick screams Love Boat Captains.

Hey Allan, just do me a favor and pass on Trout. Make my decision easy, okay? But for once, it’s at least nice to have options. I can’t wait for the draft!

Dan, Dan, Dan… I can appreciate a Fantasy Baseball smokescreen as much as the next guy. And when it comes to drafting, playing coy can have its advantages. But, the entire world knows that Bryant and Trout are going 1&2. It would be unparalleled absurdity if they didn’t. With that being said, your drafts don’t always go great, and you have the tendency to make rash decisions. So, who knows?? Maybe you’re keeping Kershaw in your sights? Couldn’t help but notice you didn’t mention him.

I like how you started this post. Unique intro…

Now that you’re writing again, is there a Champions post in the future? (Asking for a friend )

Bryant is not the consensus second overall pick this year. It appears that Mookie Betts is. This is just from the research that I’ve gathered.

I’ve got alot of exciting posts coming. I’m sure I can find time to slide your champions post in there somewhere. You still owe Ginger three of them you know.

I can guarantee you that unless through trade, Clayton Kershaw will NOT be a member of team RTC this year. As much as your claim I love pitching, I’ve never taken a pitcher in the first round.

Glad to be writing again. More to come.

Anyone with 1/2 a brain takes Bryant 1 or 2! He puts up #’s, and is eligible to play like 6 positions!

  4. Dan the #1 Rays Fan Says:

It’s not a slam dunk at all. Mookie Betts will steal 30 bases, hit for a higher average and strikeout way less.

If you’re telling me you value Bryant over Betts, then you’re telling me that Mookie’s power was a bit of a fluke. Because if Mookie goes .290, 30 HRs, 100 RBI and 30 SBs, then he’ll probably be the #1 player in fantasy. I prefer Bryant, but there’s some people taking Mookie over even Trout.

Don’t let Mookie fall to #4…. excited for another year of baseball, and another disappointing year here in St. Pete. What are we doing about the draft/league fees this year?

  6. Foul line Dave Says:

Mookie will have a good season. I don’t see him putting up the numbers he did last year. He’s not hitting with David Ortiz in the lineup anymore. I don’t think Mookie gets the pitches he got last year. If Mookie goes 30/30, I’ll eat my shoe. Don’t get cold feet Dan! Draft Trout or Bryant!! It’s a no brainer.

As for league Payment: it’s $15, and we can get paid through PayPal.

The eating your shoe bets have never worked out for you in the past. Now Mookie may go 40/40. He may not make it to third overall…..

    We shall see!

I still think Allan is lying to disarm me….. I think he may take Trout. I need to be prepared for that outcome. Telling the whole league he’s going to do something then not doing it is the most Allan move of all time. You’re lucky you don’t have this problem!

  10. Foul line Dave Says:

I’d do backflips to have either

  11. Dan the #1 Rays Fan Says:

You had Trout last year. You couldn’t get rid of him fast enough.

  12. Foul line Dave Says:

I turned him into Scherzer & Blackmon. I think it worked out pretty well in the end.

  13. Allan Says:

    Bryant is going #1
