Lucky Man

Unlike Dan the #1 Rays fan, and his last post, I’m going to tell you why I think Opening Day is the greatest day of the year. Without trying to sound too cliche, Opening Day should be a national holiday. Kids should be free from going to school. No work for the adults. It should be mandatory to watch Major League Baseball either live or on television on the first day of the season. I don’t care if this sounds like some state mandated Kim Jong-Il nonsense. If you truly want to make “America Great Again”, watch some damn baseball.

Baseball has the gift of bringing people together. Father’s teaching their children the game at an early age. Brother’s bonding over the support of their favorite team. Or sometimes, if you’re lucky, you have a couple of great friends that take you to a Yankee/ Rays Opening Day game, and have one of the best days of your baseball watching life.

I had the pleasure of attending Opening Day yesterday, with a couple of the greatest people I know. These guys are fantastic husbands, caring fathers, pillars of the community, loyal friends, and did I mention- Stinking Yankee Fans??  Of course, I’m talking about Dennis and Dave. Also known as The October Boys and Team Stogies.

Although I always have a great time hanging out with these two, I was a tad skeptical that I would fully enjoy a Yankees vs. Rays game. Here I am, watching the two teams that I dislike the most in the baseball. Long story short, Dennis got us great seats, right behind home plate. We were close enough to get most of the called balls and strikes right. The crowd was electric. There was all kinds of baseball talk, laughing, foot long hotdogs, and overpriced beers.

I had the time of my life. The game had it’s fair share of drama and excitement. And rumor has it, the Yankees had the chance to tie it up in the 9th inning.

It was the perfect way to begin a season

I’ve been to a handful of Opening Days in my lifetime.

This one was my favorite.

Here’s a few quick hits for you:

  • The red, white & blue bunting really adds to the atmosphere at the game. It felt like a playoff game!
  • The Yankees have a very likable team. It’s a nice mix of young guys and veterans. I tried my best to come up with something bad to say about them. I must be losing my edge.
  • Joe Girardi is a tiny man. He’s a borderline little person. ( I feel better now)
  • There are a few Rays fans out there that now think that the Rays may go 162-0.
  • There are a few Rays fans out there, literally.
  • Stogies Dave is on the DL with a busted foot. I’d advise not picking him up off waivers.
  • I have a soft spot in my heart for baseball fans that keep score at the game. I’m going to go to a game and do that this year.
  • Evan Longoria needs a new walk-up song. Tantric’s “Down and Out” sucks.
  • Brad Miller comes out to “Crossroad” by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. That doesn’t suck.
  • I’ve spent way too much time thinking what my walk-up song would be, in the event that a team needs a 42 year old, light-hitting, good clubhouse guy, weak armed left fielder.
  • I came up with “Rearview Mirror” by Pearl Jam, or “Wind beneath my Wings” by Bette Midler.
  • I’m 100% sure that Dan the #1 Rays fan doesn’t have a better arm than Brett Gardner
  • If you’re in the mood for a fantastic meal. Check out PRIME Serious Steak. Two locations. 19655 Cochran Blvd, Port Charlotte & in Sarasota at the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall. Try the pork belly appetizer. You won’t be disappointed!

I’m really really glad that I didn’t write about the beauty of opening day, because it wouldn’t have been nearly as good as what you wrote in this post, amazing job!

I’m glad you enjoyed the game. I enjoyed it as well. The new turf looked really bright and amazing on TV. Did it make the trop a more enjoyable place to watch a game? It appeared to make the place a lot brighter and looked a lot more like a real baseball game.

Down and Out has been Longoria’s walk up song since 2008…. Hard to see him changing it now.

I hope more posts come in the future from Mr Fouline and the defending champion. Although I don’t see you being champion for long if you continue to rely on sad sack scrubs like Stephen Strasburg!

  2. Foul line Dave Says:

Stephen “Sad sack” Strasburg 24.5 points today.
Dan the #1 Rays fan’s best pitcher in his suck-ass rotation Chris Archer 23 pts.

This is why I have two titles, and you lucked into 1.

  3. Dan The #1 Rays Fan Says:

I smoked you in my “lucky title”. Put 430 on you in the title game. Just remember that.

  4. Foul line Dave Says:

That was like 9 years ago. Do it again!

  5. Dan The #1 Rays Fan Says:

Gimmie about… what, six months? Give or take?

  6. Allan Says:

It took Dan trading a couple of scrubs to Mike for Felix and Braun to steal that title. Lol

  7. Dan The #1 Rays Fan Says:

As opposed to lucking into the playoffs at 12-12 because David Robertson blew a save. Lol
