Drinking And Trading, The Deadline

The MLB trade deadline came and went yesterday, with plenty of fireworks to go around. Sonny Gray is a Yankee, and the Dodgers traded for Yu Darvish in a last second stunner. Those deals, among countless others, helped make this one of the most exciting trade deadlines in history.

I absolutely love the trade deadline. The anticipation, the constant refreshing of your phone to check mlbtraderumors, watching the MLB Network special and listening to Harold Reynolds somehow suggest that 11 teams in baseball should trade for the same ace, and the crashing disappointment when the Rays do absolutely nothing yet again. Deadline day is my favorite day of the year next to opening day.

But it got me thinking, with our own fantasy baseball league’s deadline fast approaching, what deals could separate the logjam of contenders from one another? What is the final piece your team needs to get over the top?

This has never happened before on thefoulline.com. It’s the first annual contenders trading wish list!

Believe The Hype trades for….. Madison Bumgarner.

Allan has the surefire offense needed to hold down his position atop the power rankings, but does he have the pitching needed? Cole Hamels, Michael Fulmer and Carlos Martinez feel like really solid #2 and #3 pitchers, but this is a team that seems to just be missing that lockdown dominant ace that can put up 60 points in a playoff game during a two start week. Bringing in Bumgarner, who’s starting to get back into form at just the right time, could solidify Allan’s position as the clear title favorite. Allan and the RedRays have a rapport, having made plenty of deals over the years. Is it time for one more?

Rays Those Cowbells trades for….. Max Scherzer

I took a big step in upgrading my pitching staff today, grabbing up and coming ace Jimmy Nelson in a deal with Allan, but it’s not enough. I want lock down pitching heading into the postseason, that’s going to be the difference this year. Similar to Allan and the RedRays, I have made many deals with Dave V over the years and we usually have no problems coming together for a good deal. If he would make Scherzer and Marwin Gonzalez available in a package, also fixing my second base problem, I would pay an astronomically high price to get that deal completed.

WillisBeTheYear trades for….. Manny Machado

Shortstop is a big hole for the leader of the Beer Division, and has been for much of the season. Paul DeJong is a decent player, but he’s nothing special and his hot streak is fast coming to an end. Willis has two second baseman. I know Dave loves Machado, but if Altuve was dangled at Dave in a potential blockbuster, I know that would get his attention. Having Brian Dozier at 2nd base and Manny Machado at SS doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me does it?

sportsmanMike trades for….. Joey Votto

Wil Myers has been decent this season, but in a year where offense has exploded and seemingly everyone has a stud first baseman, “solid” isn’t going to get it done. Votto is the elite of the elite and Dylan has shown he’s willing to move superstars if he thinks it will better his team. Adding a Votto type to his lineup could be just what this overachieving team needs to steal the final playoff spot.

Love Boat Captains trades for….. Anyone

Ginger trades once every two or three seasons or so, and that strategy works for her. It’s hard to find too much fault in it, but sitting in the 5th seed and having an inconsistent team for much of the season, some new blood could be just what the doctor ordered to get into the final four.

Yankeehaters trade for….. Mike Trout

I have it on good authority that Trout’s owner is willing to move him if a slam dunk package came along. Dave lost Charlie Blackmon Monday and his outfield could use some more punch. JD Martinez won’t hit 534 homers every week. Dave is reeling a bit right now, but if anyone is creative enough and has enough moxy to pull a deal for a guy like Trout, it’s Dave. The defending champion’s ship is sinking and taking on water. Grab the Trout and let him swim you to the surface.

Roger Dorn trades for….. Charlie Blackmon

This trade was completed earlier on Monday afternoon, Bravo! Dylan’s outfield was a mess and he’s sitting in the 7th seed, barely hanging around. This is just the kind of trade he needed to get some positive momentum going again. Blackmon is a top three hitter in fantasy and a lock for 25-30 fantasy points every week. Great trade!

Please keep in mind, I’m not suggesting anyone go into “seller” mode and give up their good players for mediocre packages. I simply looked at the standings and if you were more than two games back of a playoff spot, you didn’t make the list. Sorry!

Get those offers out there! The deadline is the 8th! Good luck to everyone this week!

I really enjoyed this post Dan. Nice job! I think you nailed it with the needs of each owner. I’m happy to see a couple of my players made the article- everyone knows I’m the most rationale owner in the league, and I’m always up for a trade. Although, I don’t see Trout’s owner actually dealing that guy, without getting a Kings Ransom in return!

And Willis be the year doesn’t trade

I’ve been keeping up dialogue with Trout’s owner. It would take a fair price, not necessarily an astronomically “high” price. He just wants fair value for what Trout is worth, that’s all. Or so he told me.

Willis traded with me earlier this year!

You should put Trouts people in contact with my people
